We purchased a 1968 Mustang with the original paint which was a special order color of yellow. On the warranty tag the space for the color is blank but in the DSO it reads 721185. We know that 72 is for San Jose Ca, but can find nothing on the rest of the code, 1185. It is a 2Dr coupe with a black vinyl top. We would like to find out which color of yellow it is and how many were made in that color.

Thanks for the help!!

Hi!
A year ago I bought a '68 Mustang coupe and was puzzled by the warranty number.  The paint code was blank.  I started researching it online and saw the picture of your car on another website with the warranty number.  Mine too was a special paint, orange with a black "C" stripe.  And, apparently, your car and mine went down the San Jose assembly line together.  Mine too was built on 16B, February 16, 1968.  They might have been ordered by the same dealer.  I don't know because I haven't done a Marti report yet.  Here's the warranty info.  65A (coupe), "blank" (color), 2A (trim, standard, black), 16B (built 2/16/68), 721187 (DSO, San Jose District Special Order #1187), 2 (axle, 2.79:1) 5 (trans, 4 speed).  As you can see your DSO number of 1185 was only two apart.  The VIN is 8R01C1393**, mine came with the 289, yours the "J" code 302.  I'd be curious to see how close your VIN sequence is to mine.
Unfortunately, mine wasn't in as good a shape as yours.  My son and I have it totally disassembled now and are restoring it.  By the way, have you looked for the build sheet?  It was sometimes stuffed up under one of the seats.  Alas, after totally disassembling ours we haven't found it.  Also, sometimes there will be a "buck tag", a small metal plate attached near the passenger side hood hinge on the fender apron with the paint code, but my information is that only the Dearborn and Metuchen plants did that, and not the San Jose plant.  Well, good luck, and I'd sure like to hear anything you've found out about the "twin".

There is a website I found that has specs for mustangs. Maybe this will help. Also I don't think the numbers are what says your color. There should be a letter for color code. If you look at the site below, they have color charts.
