my father n law put a 98 explorer motor into my 97 ford ranger and all we have had is trouble with flywheel breaking.. will a 98 explorer motor work with my 97 ranger transmission or is this what is causing the problem? we had changed everything from torque converter, starter, bushings, etc. everything between the tranny to motor. this makes the 4th time the fly wheel has broken. it breaks in the middle.. thanks to anyone who can shed a lil light on this very aggravating situation.

I do not know the compatibility, but when you are installing the flywheel and associated components are you torquing the bolts correctly?

What engine did the two vehicles have? If they both had the 4.0 OHV motor, then the flywheel is the same. Did you put the separator plate in between the block and transmission and are you putting the flywheel on facing correctly?

yes, they were both 4.0 motors. yes, the spacer is there and yes hes putting it on facing the right way.. it is really driving us nuts.

I would look at the torque convertor nose. Make sure that it does not have a mark on it from not going into the crankshaft squarely. Your using the alignment dowel pins. Can't think of anything else just now. Did both motors have auto trans? If not, then one with the manual may have a pilot bearing in the center of crankshaft hole.
