Im new to this forum.  I searched the forum for this unusual problem and did not get a hit so here goes...
The AC blew out on our '02 Xplr XLT (4.0L) today at a light.  There was a pop and then the truck struggled when my wife stepped on the accelerator.  Within a block there was smoke coming from driver's side front wheel well.  We pulled over and I took a look but could not see exactly what it was.  At first I thought it was a leak in one of the coolant hoses since it was wet on the lower side of engine bay but not likely since there wasn't much of a leak no dripping. .

I let it cool a bit and looked under it and what I found surprized me.  It turns out it was the ac compressor housing on the lower half has a hole blown out (roughly 2x3). The hoses are intact and there were no signs prior that we noticed.  I collected the pieces and I took pics.  I have never heard of this.  The only thing I can think of is there was a high pressure issue but I assumed the hoses would give before the (cast) housing .

anybody heard of this before?  what causes it.
