Dear All,
I pulled out my automatic tranny out of my 1989 LX 5.0 and the only thing I did to it while it was out was change the filter.  I put it back in and now it won't shift out of second gear.  Everything underneath looks good, what could be wrong?  Is this electrical?
Thanks...
P.S: Thanks to everyone who has and who will respond....thanks....

Maybe the converter (front of trans.) wasn't fully seated when you installed the trans. to the engine. Were converter nuts tightened? By the way - you could have pulled the trans. filter and pan off with it in the car and bolted to the motor. Is there anything else you did? Is this stock AOD trans.? (I assume) If the trans. had a vacuum modulator I'd say start there and make sure all electrical wires are plugged correctly. Does the shifter move from the Park to Low gears smoothly?

The tranny was pulled when I rebuilt the motor.  My students and I did it as a school project.  The car drove and shifted normally for the first few test drives.  Then one afternoon we backed it out of the wash bay and it would not go into gear at all.  The shifter would slide up and down, but I could not get the tranny to engage in any gears.  I turned the engine off and then on, and it then went into gear, but it wouldn't shift out of 2nd.  The shifter would move but the tranny stayed in 2nd.  I noticed that the tachometer was also out, showing a much higher rpm.  We parked it and the next day there was a puddle of tranny fluid on the ground.
Thanks,
P.S: It is a stock tranny and it does shift smoothly.
