I've heard that there was never an actual authentic Edsel Ranchero made by Ford Motor Company.  I find this interesting since I've seen several designed as 58 Edsel front clip with a 57 Ford Ranchero completing the rest of the car.  Back in the mid to late sixties a friend of mine had one that was red and white and looked like it came from the factory like that.  I drove it several times and noticed that it even said Edsel on the dash.  What is the real story behind these cars.  Did Edsel make a 58 Ranchero, or were there just a lot of people with a fascination of making 57 Ford Rancheros into 58 Edsel Rancheros?

I remember when the Edsel's came out new and don't remember any Rancheros. I think it was a fascination with front clip ghanges. After all it was the '50's and customizing was hot.

You are correct, there was no such thing as an Edsel Ranchero although many have been built over the years. For the 1958 model year introduced on Sept. 4, 1957 (recently celebrated the 50th anniversary) there were 18 models in 4 series and 3 different station wagons  in 6 and 9 passenger versions including a two door - the Roundup. See http://edsel.net for some more info.

Interesting I came acrossed that exact situation. What it was was a 59 Ranchero with the Edsel front clip. The previous guy had the gauges tail lights and fender badges. Didn't buy it too much work.
