Escort Heating Core Problems

I have a '97 Escort SW that is emitting a strong sweet scent, which I believe is the radiator coolant. I can smell it in the car when I turn the defrost on. Can anyone tell me what the problm might be, and if so how to fix it? I'd rather not have a mechanic do it. I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer. And yes, it is a pile of shit with a crapload of miles, but it's my only car at the moment. Thanks again.
