You should be able to pull the ignition lockset out,, and on the shoulder of the casting where the lockset slides into is a small plastic black (usually)clip connecter that holds a brass 'tang' for grounding the 'key in ignition' chime circuit.. You won't have, or shouldn't have any key warning with the connector/tang 'slid off' and tapped/tucked over to the side of the ignition.. Don't cut the wire.. To remove the lockset,, turn the key to the ON position,, then insert a small punch ect in the access hole on the 'bottom' column cover.. Push in slightly and pull the lockset out.. To remove the black plastic connector you'll need to seperate/lift the column cover pieces/sections..

Does it 'sound' just like the key is inserted?

There are five warning chimes and lamps thatthe GEM/CTM (Generic Electronic Module/Central Timer Module) control,, headlights operating without the ignition on (chime only), door ajar (chime and lamp), key-in-ignition (chime only), and driver seat belt warning (chime and lamp). Here's a list of the their functions.. Could be a module issue, but worth a look at the ignition key imput to the GEM/CTM..
Audible Warnings are:
1.Warning Condition
2.Lamp Duration
3.Audible Duration
4.Audible Output

It's probably a door ajar alarm.

Although the key in ignition alarm does break off fairly easy.

it sounds like the key is in the ignition when it is not and this happens when the door is open
