Hi,  sorry if this is already covered somewhere but I could not find it. The problem is '95 Explorer Sport 5spd Manual 1-4 forward all work fine, 5 is a little noisy but not too bad, reverse, however, can be engaged but nothing other than a terrible noise happens. Any clues where to start!!!! Also a buddy picked up 5spd tranny but doesnt know if its 2wd or 4x4 how do you tell? can you use a 4x4 box in a 2wd truck?

Thanks in advance.

You either have a bad clutch or blew your reverse gear out. 4X4 will not fit without a different crossmember and rear driveshaft - plus you must check bolt number and arrangement to see if the trans. would bolt up to the engine. 4X4 trannys always have a transfercase flange instead of tapering off into a rear seal.

Thanks for that. I dont think its the clutch as the car drives ok in forward so must have blown reverse. Thanks for that.

It sound like reverse gear went. I think you know that. You may be able to use the transmission either way. If it has a tailshaft it's 2wd. if not then there would be 4 bolts to bolt up a transfer case to it. You may be able to remove the tail shaft and bolt it up to the transfer case. Check the numbers on both tranny's with a wrecking yard and see what they fit.

If you totally change it out to the 4 wheel tranny. remember to grab the 4 wheel rear driveshaft (they're shorter).

You can use the trans. off a 4 wheel but you have no front axle so it will need to be shifted into 2 wheel drive. The cool thing is you'll then have 2 wheel high and low ranges. Or you could just buy the whole frame and 4 wheel wiring harnesses and transplant all your stuff onto it.

The 2wd and the 4wd have nothing to do with the transmission. The 2wd and the 4wd are selected by the transfer case. The transfer case bolts to the back of the transmission in most cases. You can separate the two and just have a transmission for a 2wd vehicle. That should have been mechanics 101. If in the future you want to contradict me at least get you facts right. You shouldn't give advice if you don't know what you are talking about. You have contradicted every post I have done with wrong information. You seem to have a grip on this forum and no one has the last word except you. Don't you have a life?  I'm done posting here I thought I could help people, but people like you make it difficult. A little knowledge is dangrous, and you have as little as anyone. It's all yours. BYE

I was just assuming that the cases might not be the same and he might go all out and use the 4 wheel trans. I'm sorry you too are so perfect - but I wasn't trying to contradict you and even if I unintentionally did I wasn't trying to make you cry like some big baby. Buck up for God's sake - he might even decide to do what neither one of us suggested - will you cry then too and say he had to do what you said instead of contradicting you? What I said to do is just if he wanted the addition. I admit your idea is better but you don't have to be an a** f**king hole just cause I didn't get to read what you wrote well enough. If the cases don't match you'll only really look like a ding dong, huh? Why you didn't say if you're 100 percent sure or not? Have you done it before? Tell us instead of flipping out. I just like helping some too - but I always defend myself if I am also right. The first step to not being a baby is admitting it would work my way too (although yours IS better and would match the old driveshaft if the cases match up). I think I might sign off the forum first. You wouldn't want someone who knows too much in general. I'm sorry I didn't take classes in crybaby 101.

Thank you both for your input.  It would be a shame to lose expertise over misunderstandings. There is always more than one answer to nearly every problem, even if that answer is cut your losses and scrap her. Again thanks to you both, this has given me some "food for thought". I believe my buddy only got the tranny but will not know until tuesday. So if its a 4wd with/out transfer case, if I read the posts right, I should be able to bolt the rear of the current 2wd box to the back, if the rest of the box is the same, and hey presto its back to 6 functioning gears. (providing my buddy hasnt shelled out for a broken box !!!!!!).

Good luck and sorry for arguing. I hate arguments. There really should be an easier way about things.

Then you shouldn't start anything you hate. Gcar is right, you always have to have the last word. Also your lack of intelligence shows by your name calling. It says in your profile you are a mechanic. You got to be the stupidest mechanic on earth. I wouldn't let you work on a Yugo. Your answers are assenine at best. Like the others have said, if you don't know what you are talking about SHUT UP! You don't have to have the last word. I know you are going to call me names, but you know what I don't care! It just shows what an idiot you really are. why don't you do everyone a favor and don't post anymore because you don't know anything about mechanics and it shows.

Getting the last word and simply not going away are the same thing. Have you ever even seen a Yugo? (I've been up close and personal with those too). If you don't care to have me calling you a crybaby too- why'd you write this stupidity? I'm sorry I'm not lame enough to walk away when someone is a jackass to me - tough it. Life is a strange thing - you do a lot of what you hate regardless what you want and even some times there's no choice. He chose to start being an ass - I chose to not give up. I look for common ground - he up and quit. Quitting a fight you began is the sign of a real loser. He began it. I'm still talking. Why cry about not being right 100 percent of the time. I'm not always right or always crying. At least I'd be willing to apologize - would he?

OK Dick, maybe he just didn't want to argue with someone who always had to have the last word and it just wasn't worth his time to go at it with you.
Anyways, I would have a battle of wits with you but I was taught not to pick on the handicaped.

LOL, I'm still here. I just hit the ignore button and I can not see his posts and see what a jerk he is. Makes for a better forum. Thanks for your support.

No Problem, he didn't have to go at you like that. Glad to help. Are you really that good of a mechanic? I have a problem with the front end on my 98 Explorer. Maybe you could help me.

I don't know if I'm that good, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once! LOL I'll email you about your problem. I don't want to start anything here that I may have to apologize for.
