My 1999 Ford F-150 has a problem with the odometer going black when i m starting up the engine or just turning on the ignition :( Sometimes it comes on and stays on but usually after i drive a mile or two it comes on. To me it sounds like a lose connection but have no clue on where. Now a friend of mine told me that he has heard of some instrument cluster having to be sent out to get refurbished :( Surely if that is the case it may be just a small component going out? Thanks

it sounds like your insturment cluster is going bad, and i have never heard of getting them refurbished, if you were to replace it i don't think you would be able to do it yourself unless you have, or have access to a WDS because you have to program the new cluster, but if you know where it can be refurbished i would do that.

It's is becoming quite a common issue anymore.

I had a 1999 f150 with the same problem, Ford wanted close to 500.00 for the repair. I found a speedometer shop in Tacoma, Tacoma Speedometer and Instrument. They repaired mine for 165.00, and a one day turn around. Odometer has been working fine for about 8 months now, with no problems. They said it is a pretty common problem with the displays going bad. good luck

The fading digital odometer is very common in 1999 - 2003 Ford Pickups (F150, F250 & F350) and SUVs (Explorer & Expedition.) You can easily fix it yourself. See http://www.odometer-repair.com for a full discussion of the intermittent odometer problem and the various options for repairing it.

Or go to following site for full details and pictures to do the Job yourself at next to no cost except of your time.
It took me 2 1/2 hours easy pace  to complete fix.
Note to remove Lightswitch see post # 9 from girlwithtruck.
Also check all solder points for odometer connections as in my case all had to be redone.
All that was necessary was to melt and reflow the solder at each  point.
Good Luck to all.
