I was looking on ebay at them performance chip for my ford 1991 5.8l. the ones that promise you 7-8 mpg and 15-20 hp gain. I was just wondering in any one else had bought them and had any luck. Or are they just a waste of money

The HP gains are usually there, or close, but I'd think the MPG claims might be a tad off or a stretch.. More so if you 'enjoy' the increased ponies. Most times power/MPG are measured at 'optimized' conditions.. I'm no expert, but I sold my brother my old 93 F150 5.0 and he installed a superchips unit and a K&N.. He wanted some extra power to tow his 24ft 5er which was a decent pull, and he noticed the power gain..

My 05 6.0 runs the Diablo Predator and I run  it at the 65HP, 155ft/lbs gain.. So the power is close to 400HP.. When I 'behave' I usually see 1 or maybe 2 MPG gain.. The best part is, you at least see the incresed HP with no loss of MPG..

Be careful with what you are buying.  If it is one of those chips for $30, then it's a waist of money.  However, if it is a brand name (Hypertech, Superchip, ect.) then you should get the hp out of it.

Like Hayapower said, the mpg is a stretch.  Especially when you are constantly mashing the pedal down because of the new found ponies!

I have a 5.4L f150 (gas)
do the chip upgrades work on gas engines?
I know someone who has installed one in a diesel but don't know any other info.
any help apreciated.

Most any car w/ a computer can use a performance chip; fuel type is not an issue.
