for a 2003 Crown Victoria? I know it differs because of many factors but in general what is a good price range for a paint job. Car is black.

Going back Black, with virtually no repairs/rust, in base coat, clear coat, should start around 2 grand. Much cheaper and I'd be suspect of cheap paints, etc. You can save some doing sanding, etc yourself.

Hello
I've been doing a lot of research on auto painting the last week or so
I painted my wagon about 3 years ago, and rust is already showing through.
that is what you get by not doing homework and listening to the guy behind
the counter
He sold me on a primer surfacer, what a mistake, plus It's a base\clearcoat
so it all has to come off... and don't let anyone tell you other wise... base paint
never hardens. it's the clear that hardens.
Now just material cost in today world is (Ouch) got me.
Sherwin Williams Dimensions paint is about $400 a gal for single stage. plus or minus
Their epoxy primer DTM is about $230 a gal. those price are just for
that, there is extra for the hardener and reducers.
so you can be up to $$700 to $1000 in just material depending on how much
you need, and these prices are for solid color, metallic in single stage are higher
I paid $90 for a quart with hardener for single stage metallic from SW
and that was from a distributor, the actual SW store wants way more $$$$
Since you have a Merc, with a base\clear, you need to strip the paint down to bare
metal... do research on this, like I said base paint never hardens.
There is a product from Rust oleum that is a base\clear coat remover , that is
probably the best way to go, as your sandpaper will clog all the time
So that 2k price sounds about right.
I'll not be using SW paint, even though it very good, just out of my money wheel
but there are many other good quality paints out there, so do the research
BTW if your looking at having one of the chain paint shops, Macco ask them
which paint they use, I know before they sold 1 day was using Sherwin Williams
Epoxy primer is water proof, and air proof... so once the metal is prepped right
it will not rust through. and if you panels are straight then that's all you need
but if body work is needed, then strip paint, epoxy, body work, epoxy over worked
area, then if needed a surfacer primer is needed which is sand able
Well guess I shot my mouth off enough..
Best
