Default Early 1960s 6 cylinder Factory Rebuilt Engine

I have an 80 year old friend who purchased an early OHV 6 cylinder engine several years ago. It was to go to a person who was going to put it into a truck. He then realized that it wasn't powerful enough and didn't go through with it.
The gentleman selling it is an honest, 80 year old mechanic who told me it was a "factory rebuilt" engine. I believe it will fit into early 1960s Fords up to 1964 and perhaps even later.
The engine is $600 and is located in Western New York. It has been stored indoors and turns over freely.

It doesn't look like a 240 CID. The distributor and the fuel pump are in the wrong place and i can't tell if there is a side cover or not. What came prior to the 240/300 family 6 cyl?

I think it is a 223. Would it bolt right into something after '64?
