Default 1995 E250 5.8L - unterminated vacume hoses

I had a code 332 - "EGR valve opening not detected" and found that there was no vacuum at the EGR solenoid. On tracing that I found that the EVR was not getting vacuum either. I traced that black line around to in front of the engine between radiator and engine on the passenger side. On the way it is joined by a red vacuum line which starts at the intake manifold and ends at the same place. They are both in a rubber plug that is not attached to anything and I can not find anything it might plug in to.
The holes on the other side were open but plugged with some tape.
I found the red one was the main vacuum supply and so I looped it over to the black hose.
So the EVR is now getting a vacuum and I am no longer getting code 332.

What is SUPPOSED to happen with that?
Is it supposed to be plugged into something I'm not seeing?

There should be a vacuum diagram on the underside of the hood. Is it still there?

Yes the diagram is still visible to those that look... then there's me.
That termination is labeled "VRESSER".
Vacuum Reservoir or vacuum cannister.
Looks like tomato juice can huh?
Previous owner must have removed it, maybe it had holes in it.
So do I need it?
Is it just to even out vacuum pressure?
If I just loop the red main vacuum line to the black line would that be ok?
This 351 is an EFI engine. Thanks

Look at it this way, if Ford could have eliminated that juice can reservoir and saved 25 cents, multiply that by the number of vehicles produced that use it, well I think you get my point. It's there for a reason and that probably is for when you open the throttle and vacuum in the engine manifold drops, whatever is operated by vacuum continues to have an uninterupted vacuum supply. Most of the time ? we don't try to reengineer them we just try to fix? them! lol

Wise words, thanks.
I'm seeing them on ebay in the mid30s.
I think I'll try the junkyard.
If that doesn't pan out maybe making one using a large juice can.

The reservoir had a check valve mounted in the end of the can to allow vacuum to be stored, and not bleed out like Hanky mentioned on WOT conditions/low vacuum situations..

Makes sense.
But it would be a single check valve on the red (intake manifold) side. right?
The other side (black) you would want open to share whatever vacuum is left in the can the the various solenoids.
I will keep that in mind.
Thanks

Well I found one at the junkyard. It was in a '95 F250 with a 351.
It had a little rust on it but holds air pretty well - a little seepage at the plastic insert. I pointed these out to the man and he let me have the can and a jack for $20 cash monies...

I washed the outside with soap and water and gave it a light sand and some spray paint. I inserted my vacuum hoses into the fitting that came with it. The red side is the check valve. I can suck air out there but not blow in. The black side is open both ways.

I have had it in for 3 days and about 200 miles. First thing I did was go pass the emissions test. I have not had the 332 or any other codes. AND nearing the end of my first 10 gallons of gas, I'm at about 160 miles for a whopping 16mpg! So here it is in all it's glory:

Good job! That's great MPG for that engine!
