1995 Ford Tuscany Conversion Van 5.8L w/E4OD
It has 185K miles showing. It was shifting hard between 1st and 2nd. I found a leak at rear of the trans-pan gasket. Dropped pan, drained and only got 10 quarts out so thats how low it got but certainly was low enough to affect shifting. Installed new filter and put 12.5 (so far) quarts of new Dextron III/Mercron fluid in. Shifts smooth now but seems to stay in 2nd longer than I remember. No harsh shifts but lingers in 2nd noticably longer. This Tuscany conversion heavy duty/towing package includes a good sized transmission cooler up front and I'm wondering if the system takes alot more than the 12 quarts that the goodbook says (1995 & earlier E4OD capacity) a drained system should take because of the optional cooler? Could the lingering 2nd gear be because it needs more fluid? Should I increase the fluid by half quart increments to see? Thanks!

couldn't tell you, but the way to check the transmission fluid, is to check it when the trans oil is hot. Next time you drive somewhere and come back home, check the transmission fluid level, and there will be a couple small holes at the bottom, it should be in between there.
