Default 4R70W slipping in first and second

Hello folks, I have a 2002 E250 with a 4.2. It goes into first gear very softly and then creeps forward. If I apply too much gas it slips out of gear. I can feather the gas and get it up to speed but then I have to play with it to go into second where it also slips out of gear with too much gas. After that it seems to go into 3rd and overdirive ok. I can actually get it up to highway speeds 60-65 etc. Also reverse works just fine no problems at all there.
I'm not a tranny specialist but definitely not afraid to tackle this. What are some tests I can do? Also I am going to drop the pan and change fluid/ filter anyhow so valve body, accumulator concerns can be addressed at this time.
Any help would be geratly appreciated

A plugged filter could be causing a starving condition where it can't get enough fluid to build up pressure. Since we don't know when the filter and fluid were ever changed and how many miles are on the trans that might be a good place to start. It might also be a good idea to check all the connections at the plugs on the trans too. If after you do those checks then you may need to do some pressure tests to go deeper into the problem.

I don't know if "Kenster" will read your request, but that is one of the reasons it is appreciated when someone provides an update as to whether they solved the problem or not.
Has the trans in your vehicle had any kind of fluid and filter service?
