Missing vacuum line

Missing vacuum line
Hi guys
I am pleased to join a group who can save me from myself.
I changed the oil pan on a 1993 E150 with a 5.8 liter engine and automatic transmission.
To do so it was necessary to remove the tower on top of the intake manifold.
When I replaced the tower there was a vacuum port near the top centre that should have a line attached. I cannot find this line.
The port is a short metal nipple with a short rubber hose slipped over it. It would seem that a metal line would slip into the hose. I cannot locate a loose line anywhere.
The transmission shifts well although a abruptly. The engine also isles a bit fast and gas mileage is poor. The code reader only indicates a vacuum problem.
Because of the rough shifting I thought it may be a transmission modulator line but I can't trace one back.
I stuck a quarter inch bolt in the rubber hose and the van can be driven.
What are your thoughts on the missing lline?
Thanks
Vern
