Default your mpg?

Searching for a length/wheelbase/engine combination in the E-series that will give me an average of 20mpg - what has been your experience with your vans?

Maybe down a long hill empty ,with the engine off you might come close ! Have never heard of any E Series coming near that number.

Best I ever did was 18 on the highway with an '85 I owned several years ago. It had a 302 4bbl. auto. Overall, maybe 14 on a trip. It was a 1/2 ton.

Unfortunately computer controlled vehicles were not primarily computerized for mileage .If mileage benefitted, that was a bonus. The computer or a good part of it was to control emissions and increase reliability. There are many older vehicles that get better mileage than some newer ones. Some of the mileage advancements are due to engine size and overall weight reduction. The big drive is on to provide better power with a smaller engine by way of turbocharging. The older vehicles that obtained better MPG most likely cannot meet the strict pollution requirements of today. IMHO , that's the way I see it from where I am.

Last 2 Vans.

1. 2003 E350 LWB Super Duty - 7.3 - consistently 21 mpg on highway. 800,000 miles.

2. 2010 E250 LWB Super Duty - 5.4 - consistently 17.5 mpg on highway. 576,000 miles still running strong.

Did you really drive 115,200 miles a year with that 2010 ? That's like 2,200 miles a week. How did you do that?

Hanky,

Yes, the mileage is correct. I run expedited freight over the lower 48 and Canada. I have a "little" different maintenance schedule than most people. Can't say enough good things about Ford vans.

Would you be kind enough to share some of your maintenance policies with those of us that seek to get the results you are getting ? Knowing the little we know even the newer vehicles suffer problems and running the schedule you must run doesn't allow very much time for unscheduled maintenance. Hard to believe you got a 5.4 to get past 300,000 mi. without engine replacement. How many hours per day do you run these vehicles? Is it a 7 day operation?
