I have a 2007 Edge - I put a alot of highway miles on it (25,000 currently) I think it is starting to slip between gears - not sure if anyone has experienced anything like this?

 

I have a 2008 Edge with 6000 miles. Same clunking transmission problem. Seemed to happen after a long drive...hundreds of miles...parked in lot overnight. The next morning under moderate acceleration it wound out. It appears to me that the transmission failed to engage. Basically the engine then reached a higher RPM than normal. When it finally engaged, it made that horendous clunking noise...It has actually happened twice to me. Since it seems to be such an intermittant problem, I figured that any service center would have a hard time believing anyone. It is a rather hard thing to describe and to potentially duplicate. It seems though that the two times it has happened to me they were under the same circumstances as I described. Maybe someone else can verify. I do plan on taking it in after my current road trip to see what the service techs have to say. Good to know at least that other people have had similar issues. That it is good ammunition to take to the dealer. They shouldn't deny this type of thing. Chances are they have probably seen it before.

 

I have a 2007 SEL Ford Edge with 18K miles on it (under a year old) and am having very similar transmission issues as the ones listed. I was experiencing some hard shifting once in awhile and didn’t really think much of it until two weeks ago when I was driving on the highway in mixed traffic. I was going 35-45mph and when I’d press on the gas to accelerate the car wouldn’tand then all of the sudden my rpm gage shot up from 2 to 4 and then the car jerked forward and reached a higher speed. It was the same feeling of being “rear-ended� that many others have mentioned. This continued for the next few miles until I could get off the highway. Once I came to a complete stop, I couldn’t even get the car to move- pressed on the gas gently a few times and then all of the sudden my mph gage jumped from 0 to 80 and 2 to 4 on my rpm gage, then the car violently jerked forward and I was able to pull into a parking lot. I dropped the car off at the local Ford dealer that night and after 3 days was given this initial diagnosis- burning fluid smell and slippage into third gear. Also, I couldn't get a rental because it wasn't the same dealership I bought the car from. Then Ford proceeded to tell me they had to take the whole transmission out and complete a cap cost analysis for the company. This was 15 days ago- I called today and according to the technician a snap ring broke off one of the drums (and fell into "something")and they are just replacing that. I am expected to be driving it by Friday. This all seems very strange to me since others are having the EXACT same type of problem I had and need completely new transmissions. Ford must see a lot of loose snap rings....and if that was the case, why no recall? Does anyone else think I'm being given the run around? How have things turned out for your Edge problems? Anyone pursue their rights under lemon laws? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cobra98, I can verify your issue. I'm glad to see someone else experienced the jump in rpms- did you ever take it in and have it looked at? What was the outcome?

 

All of this sounds so familar, We just got ours out of the shop today, the first three days in techs couldnt figure out the problem. They then decided to replace the the torque converter. The dealership guys said that they hadnt herd of any problems with the transmission and that we were the first ones to come in with this problem. It still doesnt feel right it has a hard shift from second gear to third. we have a little over 14000 miles problem started around 6500 called the dealership and they said that they couldnt do anything about the problem until we got a service light. Well we finally got the light and it had to be towed in. My wife and 15 month old baby and to wait almost 2 hrs for a tow truck. Will definately be getting rid of this car before warrinty goes out. Problems like this dont go away. Really disappointed in the way the dealership has handled things.

 

I was left on the side of the road 800 miles from home. The car wouldnot down shift. Two weeks, two transmission control sensors, two airline tickets and two Ford dealers later, I got my car back. It is now periodically disengaging at times at lower speeds. I have had many Ford products in the past and been happy with all of them. I think there is an inherent problem with this car and hope Ford will resolve the problem soon.

 

I have a 2007 Ford Edge that is 18 months old, it has been in the service dept 8 times with a transmission problem. The vehicle jerks and bumps when slowing down, braking, or accelarating, and sometimes feels like it has been rear-ended. The problems are more severe when in thehigh country.There has been sensors and other sensors replaced but the problem has not been solved. The Ford engineers has labled some of the problems with a software issue which has been called "The San Antonio Bump", the software is not available at this time. They also say that it is normal for the Edge's transmission to shift from 6th gear into 2nd gear. According to my service center there are no other 2007 Ford Edges that are experiencing these problems.

I too, own a 07 Ford Edge that DID have transmission trouble. I have had it back from the garage for 5 weeks works flawlessly !!! The problem was rendered at Courtesy Ford of Altoona, PA. This dealership is centerly located in PA. The service managers name is Scott. Ask to speak to him. Scott's transmission specialist is very educated in transmissions. I wish you Good Luck.

On 3/27/09 My 2008 Ford Edge with 6060 miles had transmission problems. I pulled up to a stop sign. When safe to proceed, my car was in drive but the engine just roared. Then we heard a strange noise and the car thrust forward at a rapid speed. I braked, the car went back to just roaring and not moving. I was approx. a mile from my home so attempted to drive car there. The engine continued to be in drive, then just like that I had no power to drive. I was almost rear ended as there wasn't a safe place to pull over. As I got as far off the road as possible and the cars were passing me, my car made a horrid noise and thrust forward (which I almost hit the cars passing me) and then the engine went back to neutral and roaring. Since this happened after 5 PM on Friday, we did not drive car all weekend. We called a tow truck on Monday 3/30 and had the car taken to nearest Ford dealer (not where we bought car). I had to rent a car, even though I had purchased that extended warranty at time of purchase to cover this sort of thing. Two days, service dept. can't find any problem with car. We were told "they" (service people) had never heard of this problem. We suggested that they read these blogs and check out what others have said. I now have my car back, nothing fixed, just upset and worried about driving in any heavy traffic. Will contact Ford Dealer that we purchased this from and also the Ford Co. and see what results we may or may not get. VERY UPSET to say the least. I may not have described it as well but I could relate to Cobra98 and Alove22's remarks.

 

YEs, same thing EDGE 2008, purchased at Galpin Ford. they claim there are no issues with the Transmission as well. Have approximately 6400 miles and it's VERY scary driving. Placed it in low as descending hill in Los Angeles (Trousdale Estate arae) and STANGE grinding sounds. Thank you for posting!!

I am SO happy I found this forum, I'd only be happier if I didn't need the outlet because my car ran well! I have a 2008, with about 15k miles on it. I noticed at about 4k miles, there was a lot of strange hesitations, and when I was pulling into the garage or a parking space slowing from a steady pace, it was almost like I'd get a little kick in the rear. I thought maybe it was because I hadn't had an oil change yet, so I went ahead and had it Jiffy Lubed (leased vehicle, dealer said they'd pay for the first one at 7,500 miles, but i'm still old school, trained under the 3k way of thinking). I noticed some improvement (or more like didn't notice the strangness still happening. Over time, it slowly returned, each time slightly improving after an oil change. Well, a couple of months ago, my father noticed my car leaking oil of some sort - turned out to be transmission fluid. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the transmission cooler, and said everything else was fine - regardless of the other things I mentioned. The very next week, I felt that major bump in the rump of my car, and little to no responsiveness on the highway, so I took it straight to the dealer. They kept it for a day and said they didn't experience it and to "keep a diary" to see if there are any trends, with AC on, in the rain etc. but these many little things happen so often and without trend, I feel like I'm loosing my mind imagining these things. What really upsets me is that I traded in my 7 year old sedan because of my 2 small children, I was afraid of being stranded with them and insisted on getting something new; but I still have that fear. Everything else about the car I love, and we are a Ford family. Before I got too pregnant to get my little one in and out of the car, I was driving our Expedition (and still love it), but my husband kept it because the sedan was just easier on the back with a large, heavy infant and toddler. Before then we had an Explorer (V6) and loved it, too. I also have a lot of experience with a manual transmission (prefer them actually) and just know my cars - somethings not right! So much so that tonight I decided to look it up, if nothing else, I'm happy to find others experiencing the same thing I am, but wish there was a better way to get the dealership to listen. I understand that there are hard times these days, but if that means you can't stand behind your existing contracts and take care of your existing customers, then let me out of my lease or trade for something else.
