Default 04 escape transmission problem

I am having issues with my 04 escape, when you first start it the escape will move in drive and reverse but after running a couple minutes the escape won't move in any gear. If you shut it off and let it set a little bit the escape will move again. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Somebody told me a catyletic converter can cause this???

it engages for about 500 yards then nothing in any gear, let it set 1/2 hour and it moves again for about 500 yards then nothing again

Have you checked the trans fluid level? Just asking.

All the internet searching your symptoms points to a trans that needs replacing - a VERY high ticket item, as in $3000+. Which kinda matches the trade-in value for an '04 XLT Escape in 'good' condition.

That's all I've got on the subject, sorry.

Ford did have some problems with the turbine shaft that turns the pump in the trans. The splines rounded off in the converter and did not pump much. You could try a pressure check to verify if pressure loss is the problem or just remove the trans and pull off the converter which is stripped inside. Replacement of the converter corrects the problem.

It seems really odd, I have worked on or around cars for 30 years and I never saw one do this? This morning I went down started the Escape, put it in gear, it went about 50 yards and it was like it ran out of fluid, that's where it sat until I pushed it back in the garage.

Would you get a code for this shaft issue?
