Autolock and Horn Chirp Programming

Using the Keyless Entry Keypad (If Equipped)

NOTE: A manual enable/disable mode allows the autolock feature to be turned off and on.
Enter the 5-digit permanent entry code into the keyless entry keypad.
Within 5 seconds of entering the code, press and hold the 7/8 button on the keypad.
Within 5 seconds of Step 2, and while holding the 7/8 button, press the 3/4 button on the keypad and release it.

NOTE: If the autolock is disabled, the horn chirps once. If the autolock feature is enabled, the horn chirps once shortly and then sounds a second time for a longer sound of the horn once the above sequence is completed.Within 5 seconds of Step 3, release the 7/8 button on the keypad.

Using the Ignition Lock Cylinder
Close all doors.
Confirm that the key is in the OFF position.

Turn the key from OFF to ON.

NOTE: Steps 4 through 8 must be carried out within 30 seconds.Press the door lock control switch UNLOCK button 3 times.
Turn the key from ON to OFF.
Press the door lock control switch UNLOCK button 3 times.

Turn the key from OFF to ON.

Verify that the horn chirps. This indicates the system is in the enable/disable mode and is ready to accept program changes.

Press the door lock control switch UNLOCK button once, then the LOCK button once to toggle the autolock feature ON/OFF.

Verify that the horn chirps 1 time. There should be only one chirp indicating that the autolock/relock feature is disabled. If 1 chirp is heard, followed by a longer sound of the horn, the autolock feature has just been enabled. Return to Step 9.

Turn the key to the OFF position to exit the enable/disable mode.

Exit the vehicle and verify that the horn chirps once to indicate that a feature is changed and that autolock has been enabled/disabled.

Can the autolock feature be turned off on my 2003 Explorer that does NOT have a keypad? My manual only explains how to do it with a keypad.

If you've lost your owners manual I found on the ford.com page you can join Ford Pass and download copies of your owner's manual. In it I found the instructions for discovering the keypad code on my 2017 Fusion. The car was a rental return and the owner's manual wasn't in it which had the 'magic card' with the key code on it. I think I remember seeing something in the manual about deactivating the autolock system also. They have many manuals that are current to you vehicle and downloadable. Hope this helps.
Code discovery procedure follows:
Displaying the Factory-Set Code
Note: You need to have two programmed keys for this procedure.
This is a copy and paste from Ford manual.
  1. Remove the key blade from the transmitter.
  1. Remove the rubber covering (A) from the cup holder. With the buttons facing upward and the unlock button facing the front of your vehicle, place the first intelligent access key into the backup slot (B).
  1. Press the push button ignition switch once and wait a few seconds.
  1. Press the push button ignition switch again and remove the key.
  1. Insert the second programmed key into the backup slot, and then press the push button ignition switch.
The factory-set code appears in the information display for a few seconds.
Note: The code may not display until after any other warning messages first display.
