16-17 in the stop and go during winter conditions is not bad mileage.
29mpg highway with an awd suv is pretty good too.

...no other similar vehicle in the class is going to get any better mileage. there is nothing wrong with your car. if run through the epa I/m rating test, it would post the same mileage as specified. you are driving real life condtions not epa test criteria.

As a side note, I live in Florida, still 80's temps. And not an awd.
I will just continue to monitor as this is basically the same info everyone has been stating.

fyi the awd turbo get better city mileage than the fwd 2.5l.
fyi#2 all the manufacturer's trend is to go to small displacement direct injection turbo for better mileage.
take comfort in your 2.5 as it may not get as good mileage, it may be more reliable than the new tech di turbo engines. I would be more concerned with reliability vs 3-4 mpg lower than a test number.
