Default Newbie on the forums. Have a few timing belt questions

Hi, I'm new here and just now found out about this forum. Seems like it has useful info in here.

But anyways, I have a 99 SE 2.0 SPIwith the sport package with 122K on it. My old man gave it to me for free with 116K back in Oct. I'm planning on doing my timing belt when the weather breaks and I went out and bought a haynes manual yesterday.

My question is I read that the timing belt tensioner is relieved by the allen wrench and held back by a drill bit. Is it this?? So I don't have to loosen the middle nut on it then?? I read on autozone.com that you do have to loosen the nut then move it back with the allen wrench. Do I still have to take the spark plugs out?? Thanks in advance.

Hello and good day to you:

"I read on autozone.com that you do have to loosen the nut then move it back with the allen wrench. This would be your easy-est route.

Replacing a Timing Belt can be Easy, or a Nightmare....the Key is keeping the Timing on TDC..(top dead center)...enanch the removal of the spark plug.

Watch you "MARKS"...and the alignment should be correct.

Good luck and Good Repairing.

Hey thanks for the reply. It was quicker than I thought. So I guess autozone.com was right about the tensioner. I thought it was an automatic spring loaded tensioner according to the haynes but I guess not. Should I mark where the tensioner was orininallyset at then move it??

My other question is after I take the crankshaft pulley off, can I put that bolt back in to crank it to TDC before removing the beft?? I don't have a chain pulley or anything to hold the pulley when taking it off(another quote according to haynes).

One more question, when I install the new belt, is the camshaft sensitive to move when I put it on? I'm just worried about throwing it out of time by moving itwhen I put it on. I want to try to keep it from moving.

Thanks again in advance.

Follow the procedure as listed in Chapter 2A..Sec 10 & 11...sub section 41... The Cam can move...That is why youneed to watch the timing marks, the Cam marks, and the Crank need to be align exactly as shown.

The Trick keeping the keeping the Crank sprocket steady.

well its takes a little more to move a cam out of time than the crank. I just need to find a way to keep the cam in place when slipping the belt on. I know i have to slip it through the crank first then the other pullies and the cam last. The zetec's have a camshaft holder tool. I'm gonna be doing this job by myself so is it still better to have a helper??
