I am new to FF, joined about a month ago. I inherited this 88, and I'm sure it has sat, covered, for 10 years. Battery is dead, the gas smells like varnish. I believe this to be a carb'd car, although the data that I find shows this model with some sort of FI. I've towed it to Texas from NC last weekend. The brakes seem ok, and the tires are so so. Car has 79K on it.

I'll spend some time getting it running, but want to know where I can find vendors for mechanical and cosmetic. I expect to replace the common areas, and probably AC components too.

Any advice on these areas are appreciated.

well, with no replies, I can at least update the project.

car is at the mechanics, and we put a new battery in - decided to just try to start it even with the varnish smelling gas. no sounds from the electric fuel pump on the tank, but it would run with some b12 spray to the throttle body. yes, this is an EFI car. it actually sounded fine when it was running, so i believe the motor is good.

i have ordered a fuel pump, strainer, and new injector - from partsgeek.com, btw. they seem to have alot of parts for this car. i'll update on the project after this next round of work.

Most parts stores will be able to get you the basic pieces you need. Make sure you use quality products for everything.
RockAuto.com can save you a few bucks, but again stay with quality.
Wagner Brakes
Motorcraft, borg warner, for ignition
Monroe for struts
O'reilly's sells good quality remanufactured alternators if you need one.
You probably need a timing belt: Gates
hopefully you drained the old gas. At least be ready to change the filter a few times.
Expect all manner of rubber parts to fail due to age.

Watch some youtubes on how to do various tasks if they are new to you.

great advice, and thank you for the time in sharing. i have some 1st stage parts on order, and will get around to the basics you mentioned above. I don't like running this motor on an old timing belt, so that is next once running, along with a tune up, and fluid changes.

i started looking a brakes, and one of the tricks we did with our triumph group was uprate the rear wheel cylinders. i can get stock toyota 4 runner calipers, 4 piston, lifetime warranty for my 6 for 30 dollars apiece, so thats a nice cheap upgrade for our old cars. and with rear wheel cylinders, we can increase the bore and improve the stopping power. the 83 escort has a 7/8 bore, compared to our stock 13/16 bore, and for about 8 dollars a piece. 8 dollar for left, 10 dollar for right? only change in the image is the bleed screw is in the other hole. tempted to buy 2 8 dollar cylinders, and swap the bleed valve.

sorry for the ramble. In the meantime, the parts are in route - and will update this thread as the car goes to next steps. can we post pics? probably. I'll get those going on the next input.

In fact it is the '62 Ford Taunus of Ford West Germany.
Originally designed here in the states, with FWD and a V4 engine. It was intended to stem the flood of imported VW beetles. But management got cold feet thinking it was too modern for the American customers. This was almost my first car.

Spelling...I must have had some booze on my mind! (80% proof?)

and to all those reading, thanks for at least peeking in. I am excited about this project, as my tr6 project is stable, this gives me something to focus on for 2 years as my daughter gets ready for her license.
