2006 Expedition leaking grease around back wheels
Hi, I'm new here. My husband and I just bought a used 2014 Ford F-150 4 door Crew Cab as well as a 2006 Ford Expedition.
The Ford F-150 is great, but I'm concerned about the Expedition. I bought it 3 weeks ago and have a 30 day warranty. Today my husband drove it and here is what he experienced:
He was parked with the engine running. When he put it into drive it started making a very loud noise that sounded like it was coming from the back end, and the sound lasted until he got home, about 5 miles away. When he got home he looked under the back end of the truck and first noticed that one of the rings was jammed and then it fell off. Then he also noticed a bunch of grease around the back wheels. Obviously we know nothing about cars and we don't know the names of the parts, so I am attaching pictures for you to see.
Any help would be SOOOO appreciated. I only have about a week to return the car.

It does appear that the retaining ring that holds the rubber boot in place came off and allowed the lubricant to get slung around and out of the joint.
Since it was already making noise it probably requires replacement. Without being able to actually inspect the boot and flexible joint can't tell the amount of damage done.
Suggest you insist on replacing the shaft with the joint on it and be cautious about just replacing the ring that holds the boot in place. Also,consider getting a second opinion by a qualified shop that can physically check it.
