Post 4WD, Driving without CV Axles installed

I am a Mechanic by trade but a friend of mine brought her 2001 Ford Expedition to BIG O Tire in Arizona when the front differential was making a noise. The mechanic at the tire store removed BOTH CV axles and told her she could drive it without worrying about anything . 200 miles down the road (I am surprised it lasted that long ), both front Spindles seized up and the wheels were canted outwards. ...... I am just glad she did not have an accident.

What I am looking for is where in writing does it say you can not drive with the CV Axles out and what would happen if you do? I know that the Bearings are Centered and Pre-Loaded and hold the Assembly in place but where does it say that in a Publication? If I can find it in writing, the Owner of BIG O said he would pay her repair bill.

ANY ASSISTANCE is GREATLY APPRECIATED
