Default air ride compressor

I have a 2000 Expedition that when I start it the compressor kicks on and runs while I am driving. I know there is a switch under the dash to disable the suspension but will that hurt the vehicle?

My 2001 Expedition has to have the air suspension active or it squirms all over the road and has no ride. I've considered it normal to keep the ride level - even while going down the road it will kick on periodically. I would consider abnormal if it ran all the time though. that would indicate a leaky air bag. I've been agravated with the increased noise my air compressor has been making the last couple years. does anyone know of a way to quiet the vibration when it kicks in?

I replaced mine a few years ago because it was making alot of noise and also running alot. Their is a canister attached to it that acts as a dryer and a metal filter in front of it. I took it apart and cleaned the filter but had to replace the canister. It worked for a while but eventually had to replace the whole compressor. It works fine now.

It won't hurt the system to turn it off but you will get the "check Suspension" light.
