check engine light/code P0455
Hi! I have a 1998 expedition. The check engine light came on. Ran code, came up P0455. My truck runs fine. After driving my truck there is a fuel smell when I exit. Smell coming from back. When the truck is sitting there is no smell so I don't think it is a fuel leak. Smell is stronger if there is a full tank. My husband and I were under the truck and can not find any cracks in any hoses or lines. If any one can give me some suggestions on what else to look for it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Code P0455 is usually a leak in the evaporation system. It is usually a faulty or missing gas cap. Make sure your gas cap is tight and making a good seal. If not, replace it. Then reset the computer to clear the code.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, My truck had to be put on hold. Anyways, we had the cap checked and they said it was fine. I bought it 3 years ago. If I rule out the cap, any idea what else it may be? Someone told my husband to check some canister in the back. I'm not sure what it's called. Do you know anything about that? Recently I was driving with the window down and the fumes coming from my truck were real bad. The fumes have a strong fuel smell. My husband is pretty good with cars but is totally stumped with this one. We want to avoid taking it to the shop if possible, so any other info you can provide would be great! Thank you!

did you have the cap pressure tested to make sure it seals good ...my only other guess that it could be a line see if the odor is more visible from under the car or from where the gas cap is and then i would say that it is a faulty cap

RE: check engine light/code P0455
I'm from Ohio and we have this emmisions test (e-check) every two years. My husband took the truck and he said they checked the cap and it passed. I'm not sure but I think it is a pressure test. I smell the odor the strongest on the drivers side where the rear tire is. That is also where my fuel door is. Is it possible the test was wrong? Probably not I'm sure. Like I said I replaced it 3 years ago because I lost it. We replaced it with one from Auto Zone. Is there any difference between theirs and one from Ford? If it is a line how the hell do you find the hole? I don't like anyone but my husband to touch my truck so I hope this is something he can do. Also, if you or anyone can help with this. When I start driving down the road once I hit a certain speed the truck jerks. I'm not sure if it's gears changeing or what. When I watch my rpm gadge it always happens when it kicks down after accelerating. Is this normal? Thanks!
