Unhappy 1998 Explorer instrument light replacement??

I seem to have a number of instrument(gauge) lights in my explorer that are either dead or heading that direction. I lost one...then another..and now the entire gauge panel is almost completely dark.

Has anyone torn apart their dash and replaced them? Is it a pain in the butt? Is this a common issue? Its gotten to the point where I have to look very closely to tell the speedometer reading at night...which is dangerous if I have to take my eyes of the road for more than a moment..

Anyone have any diagrams showing the dash blown up or a step by step set of directions to take the dash apart to get to the LEDS/bulbs I need to replace?

did a forum search and the previous links regarding this are all dead..

thanks..

Thumbs up

Welcome to the site..

Did you check the fuses, as well as the panel dimmer control? to make sure it was accidentally moved.

For replacement of light in dash Remove the screws from the top of the instrument panel. Set the parking brake and pull the shift lever down to improve access. Rotate the instrument panel to gain access to the back. The black bulb holders house the panel lights, the tan bulb holders house the sensor lights. Reach behind and grip the back of one of the holders. Twist it counter clockwise and pull outwards. Burned out bulbs will have a black coating. Replace with an identical bulb (194).
