I just picked up a 92 ford explorer w/5speed and pushbutton 4x4
and pushbutton low range. I want to know how to properly engage and disengage my 4x4. I used it once to see if it worked and it did but had a hard time disengaging it because the 4x4 lights didn't turn off till i shut the truck down. tried using again and the truck went into nuetral when it was in gear and wouldn't drive. can any one help thanks!

 

It's in the owners manual, but I know a lot of timesmanuals aremissing when you buy a used vehicle. Mines an auto tranny but this is how I do mine, (going from my memory here)...You engageto 4 high when driving from 5 to 25 mph. If you have auto hubs...and they're working... that's all you need to do if you're on the road in snow or ice. To engage 4 Low, you must be stopped and in neutral first. I usually select 4 high first then select 4 low. (In 4 low, you can only get up to 25 mph. Inever use this unless I'm "wheelin"). To get out of either low or high...stop, tranny in neutral, push buttons until lights go out, and back up about 20 or 30 feet to disengage the hubs (if they're auto hubs). NEVER engage either low or high on hard pavement.
