MPG is worse than when I bought my Explorer
I have a 2003 Eddie Bauer 4.6L 4x2.
I was getting 18.9 MPG highway when I started.
Now, 75000 miles and one new set of tires later, I am getting 16.5 MPG highway.
I am seeing a mechanic tomorrow.
What should I have them do to restore my MPG?
- replace Sparkplugs?
- replace Wires?
- Adjust timing? (car has slight ping when accelerating)
- Air Filter (it was replaced several months ago)
- Clean fuel injectors (I am assuming I have these)
- rear pinion gearhas been replaced twice due to Ford TSB (and it sounds a littlebad again. Can this affect MPG?)
- other?
I have not had my wheel bearings greased, but all other service items have been done to schedule. Canbearings affect MPG?
Many Thanks for your advice

RE: MPG is worse than when I bought my Explorer
Replace plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, clean injectors, and cleanMAF/ACT sensors. Timing is not adjustable. Slight ping under load is normal, however an increase in pinging could be a sign of carbon build up in the cylinders or vaccum leak(s).
How long ago did you get the tires and when did you notice your mileage dropping? Type/MFG of tires can also affect mileage. I lost 2 MPG on my 97 Sport going from the Firestone Wilderness A/T's to the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S's.
