vacuum leak- homemade smoke tester-fixed
96 explorer 4.0 l 180k miles +
after many months hunting rough running intermittent engine ,finally built my smoke machine off u tube. new steel paint can rigged with schrader valve to put air in .
can with lit cigarillo in a piece of tygon tubing on output side with a little duct tape inside can . you could use a plastic 5 gallon bucket with lid . rigged output with clear tygon to brake booster hose.
The smoke came pouring out from under battery from a hole in the back of the vapor canister purge valve . temporarily fixed it --running great . all this after changing intake gaskets, spark plugs and wires , idle air control ,mass air sensor . various other sensors, tested gas regulator ..
waiting for new part rock auto. 35 dollars-- 115 local supply
Alcohol might have eat the plastic up or battery acid --this was impossible to see until smoke. remove battery and tray -- get under wheel well remove some bolts and pry back plastic wheel well to get to bottom mount . battery tray broken-- now to find a new one . .
