I have a 2002 F150 FX4 with 285 BFG All Terrains and a Ranch Hand brush guard. I filled the truck up and now 84 miles later I have already burnt half a tank of gas doing average city driving and I am easy of the gas pedal. Why is my gas mileage so bad and what can I do. This hasnt always been like this, even with the tires. A friends of mine with the same truck and tires minus brush guard gets over 100 miles in the city before he gets to half a tank.

 

You need to run an actual MPG number. Hows the air filter? Fuel filter? Tire Pressure? etc.

 

Is it winter where you are? Are you letting it idle in the driveway/parking lot to heat up before you go somewhere?

 

just a thought, it could be in winter months deq's require gas stations to use ethanol in their mixtures and doesn't run as well although cleaner. I always attributed my loss of fuel efficiency in the winter to this. i usually lose 3 to 4 mpg in the winter after the changeover. and i keep close tabs on my mileage. not that i care too much really, in a good gallon i get about 11 mpg in my 150, keep in mind though its an 86 and carb'd.

Let's see now, water does not compress, gasoline does. Any idea what happens when the piston nears TDC with water in the cylinder? Ever hear spark knock, well, this is a lot louder.

 

No, gasoline does not compress, no liquid does. But gas vapor can be, so water vapor in theory could work... However the fact that it doesn't burn would kind of be a setback... But Crower cams is working on a 6 stroke engine that uses water for a power stroke.
