1990 F150 4.9L inline 6 manual
#11
I found a "ford six" forum online. The EFI head has a few more intake manifold bolt holes, but the carb intakes will bolt up as they are (and also the EFI intakes will bolt up on old pre-EFI heads). The EFI heads have higher compression at 8.8:1 than their 73-87 carb counterparts (8.0:1), but lower compression than the 65-72 carb counterparts (8.9:1).
As such, I've found a stock carb intake manifold for $115 online with free shipping. A Carter carb for $100 with free shipping. A vacuum advance distributor for $70 with free shipping (Richporter). I'll need to take the high pressure fuel pump out of the line (leaving the low-pressure pumps in the tanks). And I believe that's it for the base conversion apart from miscellaneous hookup parts.
I'd estimate $285 + $115 or so on miscellaneous hardware. About $400 and I'll leave all emission and EFI clutter behind, having a truck I can drive, service, and maintain with great ease.
Looking forward to completing this project in the coming weeks.
Best regards,
Rick C. Hodgin
