2004 f150 lost overdrive
2004 ford f150, 4x4, lariat, super crew, lost overdrive and no second gear engine brake. The trans works fine so long as I take OD off, no debris in pan and clean fluid
I've seen a couple posts with similar problem and some look like they repaired the snap ring and some replace trans, can the snap ring be replaced without removeing the trans? Does any one have pictures or youtube to share or anymore on this issue, I'm not ready to throw down 3K for a fifty dolar fix?

Yeah, I fixed it!!!
I took the truck to a local well know transmission expert who told me right away that he knew what was wrong and it needed overhaul for $1,700 that's plus parts of course.
I checked the internet and found a couple others that had the same symptoms; lost OD suddenly, clean fluid and pan, engine revs when OD comes on, no engine brake in second, otherwise runs fine with OD button off. Sounded like they had paid quite abit for repair but it was rather simple, the OD servo retainer ring, (Ford part number F2VY7384B, $3.20) had broken and lay resting atop the valve body, found all pieces there but one, I removed the top plate from the valve body and carefully searched around with a magnet while moving the valves back and forth and low and behold there it was, the last piece of the broken retainer stuck in one of the valves keeping it from moving. The parts cost with fluid about $35.00.

Thanks for sharing that fix with us. A lot of folks probably won't get that deep into the OD problem , but for those that can and will it's a $ saver. Stay in touch ,I will probably forget your fix over time, but I know you won't and maybe you can help someone else.

I am mechanically inclined but my experience with transmissions is limited to dropping the tranny pan to change the filter. Any direction you could provide would be invaluable. I intend to give back to the forum by taking pics and doing a write-up so that members after me will have clear direction on how to complete this procedure.
If any other member of this forum has info to provide on this prior to kbrajen' response it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this post. I have a 2004 F-150 pickup, and the overdrive went out also. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and have tools, but I'm not sure if I might be over my head on this one. How much of the transmission do I need to disassemble in order to get to the servo retainer ring? I've never gotten into the transmission. Thanks.

BE CAREFUL! The 4R70W and the E4OD are NOT interchangeable transmissions! They are totally different internally. And yes, the o/d pistons, rods, and snap rings were forever breaking. But an E4OD that looses o/d is a different can of worms.
