Unhappy 2010 F150 Cruise Control

I had been doing some reading in other places. They said that they were able to get OEM cruise control added to their older model trucks. All of them said they ordered a OEM steering wheel fitted with cruise control, replaced it with the new one and then brought it to the dealership for programming. I read that they normally cost $50-$100 for programming.

Many of the sites that I went to recommended going to: http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com

I went there and found the OEM Steering wheel for the truck at:
http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com.../0014/f1502009

They are listed for $324.95 plus 13.95 SH for the lower 48 states.

I contacted the Ford dealership to verify a quote on the programming. The answer that I got from my local dealership was if it didn't come with it, you can't add it because there isn't a wire harness for it installed.

I contacted the cruise control store and asked them if they knew if every model of F150 came with the harness for the cruise control and explained to them what my dealership said. They assurred me that the harness was installed. They said for me to contact the dealership again and let them know that they can contact the cruise control store and they will assist the dealer in a 15-20 minute walkthrough on the programming at no charge.

I was thinking about pulling apart the steering wheel and having a look. The cruise control store has directions on how to do this but said that the installation for the F150 is so easy that they didn't need one. They told me to remove the three screws on the back, the air bag pops off. There is one bolt holding the sterring wheel on that does not require a puller. After that is removed the steering wheels pops right off. They said the installation start to finish takes roughly 15 minutes as well.

I'd hate to go through this, get the steering wheel, then no one want to program it. Any suggestions? I am about to call a different dealer to see what they say.

I should have paid more attention when I bought the truck. I didn't realize I didn't have one until I got home. I was looking everywhere during my drive back to find the cruise control. Makes sense why I couldn't find it.

I purchased the 2010 Ford F150 XL, base model. It came stock with the 4.6 liter Engine, 4x2, power locks, power windows, and AM/FM Radio.

I went down a list of dealers closest to me in San Antonio, TX. Here is what they quoted me:
1. McCombs Ford West - 210-767-2915 - $135
2. Mac Haik's Southway Ford - 210-922-2222 - No Answer
3. Red McCombs Ford (Where I got the truck) - 866-556-7523 - $88
4. Northside Ford - 800-481-8534 - No Answer
5. Grande Ford - 210-661-4121 - $85-$120 (time based)
6. Planet Pickup - 210-525-8789 - $85-$150 (by vehicle type) stated he has done
through North Park Ford. Also stated that if the dealerships state it can't be
done, though believes that it can, that he could put in an after market for
$150-$399.
7. North Park Lincoln - 800-278-3716 - $150 - $200 - Then stated it can't be done
because they don't think I have the right harness.
8. Jordan Ford - 210-775-6836 - Stated it can't be done because they don't think I
have the right harness.

I am going to call the http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com 800-343-1382 and ask them if they can describe the plug on the steering wheel to me or send me a photo of it. I don't want to buy it, then find out I don't have the harness like the other two dealerships said.

I was going to open the steering wheel up, remove the air bag and try to locate the plug for the cruise control. I plan on taking pictures and throwing it up on my cardomain blog.

I contacted the http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com 800-343-1382. They told me the connection uses the same plug as the airbag. It's an integrated plug. I am not all that sure how it comes, maybe the steering wheel they are selling has an airbag on it as well?

I was told its the outer portion of the wheel. You reuse your airbag. The air bag plugs into the outer portion then another plug from the outer portion plugs into the main harness. I am waiting to get it in December.

Dude. What happened. I want to do the same thing in Austun. Base model XL and should have just bought the XLT but didn't (cruise and the 24 valve engine would have saved the gas to pay for the difference).

But BEFORE i go pay $300 for a new steering wheel, were you successful?

Inquiring minds wanna know.........

Cool, didn't see December in the original post. Good luck let us know how it goes. $300-400 is a lot for Cruise but would like to have for long trips.

Default 2010 F150 Cruise control add-on

Bought a steering wheel for the 09-10 F150 with the cruise control on it for $50.00 on ebay. Dealer said they will swap out the wheel and program the cruise control for about 90.00.
Scheduled for the 23rd of November 2010.

What dealer? That seems reasonable and I might drive in to get the same done. Does the install require any other parts or just the wheel with the buttons and reusing the existing airbag module? Thanks for sharing your experience.

.
Wow! I couldn't locate it on Ebay last I looked. Do you have the sellers name or the exact title you searched? I am going to look now. That's a great deal.
