Unhappy engine problem

My ford explorer suv won,t go in drive or reverse could only drive it in second gear to get it home any advice? at first it stalled on me but restarted right away

Sounds like the transmission went out on you. You're most likely going to have to get it serviced.

What year is it? this info is important.....Do you have check engine light flashing?

start with the basics......Pull the dipstick and check fluid. Does it smell or look discolored? normal fluid is bright red like strawberry syrup and has a slight petroleum smell.

If fluid is dark or smells burnt..this is bad...it probably means overhaul but not always.....

If fluid is in good shape then there is hope....drop the pan and look for particles in the pan larger then grains of salt....if no particles then perhaps you have solenoid or servo issues...or speed sensor issues if it a late model transmission..

Thanks for the info it is a 1999 model had reverse band replaced 2 yrs ago then trans problem replaced 1 yr ago so in other words i have a lemon lol.

drop the pan and take a look....best way to find out how bad it is....
