i just recently bought an 04f150
and they told me that there was a miss in the engine
and it idles very rough(shakes) they told me it was a camshaft sensor.

i took it to get a diagnostic test today and sure enough it came up with camshaft sensor. it was relatively cheap so i went ahead and bought is and installed right there in the parking lot.

when i started it the truck still has a rough shake when at idle.
could this be a bad camshaft??

 

What engine is in the truck?
Camshaft sensor problems could also be wiring problems in that circuit.
What code did you get?
There are times when a misfire will give the same symptoms you are describing.
Did you check all the vacuum lines for being cracked or loose or off?
Also, did you use the tool to set the sensor in the correct position since someone else may have changed it and set it in the wrong setting?

 

I would venture a guess as to a bad plug or a coil. the cam sensor would not necessarily cause a rough idle. have someone with a scan tool that can read mode $06 data to see which cylinder is misfiring.

im not sure what you mean by tool.
i just bought the sensor grabbed an 8mm socket and replaced the old one,
hooked the plug back up and got them to reset my check engine light.

 

and its a 5.7 v8. il go check any hoses leaking
but i havent noticed anything before

Way2old brought up a good point. And that is, did you have the rough idle before the plugs were changed? If you changed the plugs, did you notice any of the plugs with a black appearance indicating that cylinder may have a problem?
There are a lot of questions to ask that may help pin down the possible problem.
My mistake , I was thinking 94 not 2004 regarding cam sensor.
If everything checks out , you may have a bigger problem regarding cam sensor system.

 

The plugs had been changed right before i bought it.
Check engine light came back on, took it back to oreily to test and it said
Timing if off, o2 sensor, over retarded bank 1.

Now im super lost!!!

 

This brings up a whole new perspective.
Sometimes we answer questions with other questions.
Why did they change the plugs and then decide to sell the vehicle?
Do you know the people who sold the truck to you?
Could it be there was a lot more wrong than a simple cam sensor?
There are some tests you will need to do/have done, to eliminate a series of possibilities like;
cylinder compression, ign system, check if the piece that signals the cam sensor has come off, or moved from it's proper location etc. injector functon, and last, but not least the PCM.
Again as way 2old stated you need to get some tests done using special functions available on special equipment. Wish I could be more helpful.

 

I bought it from a dealer out in baton rouge
They said they changed the plugs to hopefully fix the problem
Im taking it to my uncle today who lucky for me owns a mechanic shop
Gunna see what he can do, thanx alot guys
