Default 08 250 SD front brake
after short trip 20 miles - got out & left front brake was smoking - did not notice anything unusual while driving

One of the things you can do is to jack up the left front wheel and look for any dragging or looseness. Either condition can cause the rotor to get hot and cause problems.

could it be a sticking caliper - truck just has 28k miles

Don't forget the vehicle is 7 years old and not run too much , so yes a caliper could be sticking. It is a good possibility it may need pads and that is a good time to clean , free up and lube the caliper pins.
