2004 f350 6.0 diesel
The problem, about 2 weeks ago truck started missing. Seemed to still have power. Not knowing much about diesels and no engine warnings on figured it was a minor issue. Drove truck a few more days. Truck started to smoke at this point. Seems to be black smoke and more with acceleration. So I started asking around and was told many different things to try.(seems not to many people know how to diagnose these trucks in east Pittsburgh)so started with coolant, changed that(no help)changed fuel filters(no help)took egr valve out cleaned it put new gasket in it(it had a lot of corrosion on it, thought this was going to be the issue)(didn't help) Had mechanic look and diagnose it and said it was in the 7 and 8 cylinder. Wasn't sure of the issue though. Said it could be cracked head, wiring harness, valve , egr pipe clogged, egr cooler, turbo (but he didn't think so) injectors, etc, etc, etc. Being a first time owner of a diesel not really sure what to do next. So I guess my question, is their anything simple that I haven't tried? If not who can I take it to in this area that knows wtf their doing?

Black smoke is usually egr valve stuck open but you cleaned that. Otherwise if he is getting codes for cyl 7 and 8 almost always it is the injector. The tip can crack and cause over fueling = black smoke but before that you will get excessive white smoke. If you idle is it missing? If you take off from a stop does it misfire. More so hot or cold? Is it still driving just fine? Whats wrong with a ford dealer? They usually have guys dedicated to the 6.0l because it was a different beast and was a problem from 2003 and made the ford diesel tach allot of money working on them day in day out. I know it made me money. You don't know how many times I get previous or cust diagnosis and here put these parts on and because I am so experienced in them its like second nature and I zero in on the part needed and fix it done none of this expensive guessing stuff.

Thanks for the response. I believe it did start as white smoke. Yes it is missing when at idle. Yes it is misfiring at all times seems worse when at idle. seems worse when the engine warms up. The truck seems to have good power still. It is definitely eating up more gas. Haven't drove vehicle in a few weeks. Was trying to avoid dealer at all costs .Have small business and winter just isn't the time for me to dump a lot of money.
