Default 2004 f350 gauge cluster

hello, I have a 2004 f350 super duty, and my fuel gauge is not working. I took out the hole cluster to replace it not remembering that it was all one piece, so I then blew all the dust off and put it back together and the fuel gauge started to work...meaning that instead of reading E or below E it went above E just a little, but then a few minutes latter it stopped working again...meaning it went back to its spot as if the truck was off. Oh side note, my truck is gas not diesel. I am unable to find any answers anywhere so this is my last hope. I really do not want to replace the hole gauge cluster. please e-mail me with your answers if you have any. hope my e-mail shows up so you can. Thank you and have a good day.

Charlie,
Before contemplating replacing anything, it would be a good idea to confirm what you believe to be the problem. There is a second part to this problem and that is the sending unit in the fuel tank and the wiring connections from there to the gauge cluster.

OK thank you, I was really hoping I didn't have to do that, but I will check that today.
