2nd 5.4 motor knock question...
Hey guys,
Worse case, if my 5.4 motor has severe bottom end damage, i called the local dealership and they have a factory reman 5.4 for $2900. But, I know the 2005 5.4 motors are now 3 valve, and produce more Hp. So, I was wondering if I could install a 3 valve "reman" motor in place of my old 2 valve engine? I assume the auto tranny will bolt right up. What changes would I have to do, to swap my old design 5.4 for the newer 3 valve motor?
Thanks guys,
mach

It's doubtful you'd ever get it to work. To start you'd be in for a new pcm and the 3 valve engine would have to be "off the factory line". Meaning complete engine;(intake, exhaust, all fuel injectors, coils and harness). Price tag for the engine alone would probably ring in at over $8000. The new pcm you use to make the engine work would never communicate with the rest of the truck, meaning you'd have a dead trans, dead abs and tons of other problems that I couldn't even think of so early in the morning.
You could probably spend more than what the truck is worth trying to make it work and still never get it going right. All for an extra 30 hp that you could gain just by normal performance upgrades. There's lots out there for a 5.4 SOHC. In fact, with the upgrades already available, you could get more hp out of the original 5.4 than you can atm with the newer 5.4.
