87' F-350 6.9 Overspeed problem!
Well...
I was working on my fathers truck this past weekend, and had a problem.
He's a stubbern carpenter, and wants to do everything himself even if he doesnt know how. I am an auto/diesel technician, and told him to let me do it! There was a leak coming out the side of the overspeed switch, so i took one off a known good engine and he wanted to do it himself. I let him, and by the time i got out to suffocate the intake it was to late and the rods blew a hole in the pan, and took a chunk out of the bottom end of the block (as far as i wanted to look)! I can't figure out how he did it. Does anyone have a clue?

It is like a govenor kinda. It sits on top of the engine, and tells the engine how much fuel to give. It may be the fuel regulator or something, but i have always known it as the overspeed switch. It is just a float that moves and arm to allow more/ less fuel. If put in wrong it can either starve the engine, or send it into overspeed/ runaway. Its a big mess if it happens. The only way to stop it if runaway is to take away the fuel to engine (not very safe), or to cut off the air and suffocate the engine (safer).
