Default Clunking noise while stopping or taking off.

I just bought this 2002 F250 and it makes a clunking noise when i brake or take off from a light. sounds like a loose rear end or drive shaft or ?? Why??

This seems to be a common problem for these, my 2004 F250 does it too. As I read throught the posts, several people have the same problem. I had a 1995 F150 with a clunk and it was just the slip yoke slinding in and out. I greased it and it was cured. I read on the Forum to try it on my new truck but it did not cure it. If anybody finds a fix, please post it for us. Thanks!!

Kevin.

Is your clunk on your 04 right about 2-3 mph? Starts to pull through the launch,,then 'clunk'..

Yes it is, sometimes when you are slowing and almost at a stop.

The 5R110's have some issues with clunking.. All of them do it 'to a degree'.. The ealier builds 03-04 seemed to be most afffected, and seem to be worse in the diesel applications that I've witnessed.. There's 2-3 MPH clunk, and thenshifting between the 2-3 gear upshifts.. Also the possibility of the slip yoke issue.. Ford's stand on these clunks is that there normal occurrences for this unit.. Most times the condition is worse until the unit warms, or may re-occur after a short sit time and another drive cycle.. My 03 had a pretty bad case of the 2-3 MPH clunk that if someone was riding with me, and I happened to get a good 'bang' they'd say 'what was that!! When I bought my 05I gave it a good listen,, I took it out at every operating temp, and every throttle angle to check it and it had 'zero' clunking prior to purchase, either of them for that matter.. I don't have the 2-3 MPH complaint with the 05, but I do get an occasional uncomforatble 2-3 upshift clunk.. Not always though, and more often than not the shifts asmooth.. Here's the message for the 2-3 MPH issue..

Clunk or Pop from TorqShift at 2-3 MPH, 2003-07:
A clunk or pop may be heard or felt on drive away after starting the engine, backing up and shifting to drive, usually around 2-3 MPH. This condition may be intermittent. It is the result of normal backlash (movement) between the splines on the low/reverse one-way clutch. Broadcast Message 5904

I have an '06 E-350 with the same issue. Started after installing a rebuilt trans. Shop said they lubed with trans fluid...tech bulletin specifies a specific grease. Would this make a difference? Also, do I need to worry about damage caused from the clunking over the past 1000 miles as it has been in and out of the shop being diagnosed?
