Default F-250 shifting odd?

My 2001 F-250 superduty has started making a sound like the tranny isn't shifting into the last driving gear as it should. It shifts in all the gears nice and quiet, and on the last gear it like makes a low chatter sound like it isn't getting in right, after it gets in the gear. IF I use the overdrive shut off on the shift lever it dosen't do this. It also dosen't do this all the time. It seems to have all the power it needs. It dosen't make this sound when it shifts into overdrive to pass or go up a hill. It has 81,000 miles on it. Thanks in advance

Default RE: F-250 shifting odd?

yeppers the ole OD clutch engauge chatter, whens the last time you changed the oil an filter ??

What has seemed to help a few of them is the lil bottle of friction modifier, Added to the tranny oil , you can get it from FORD , Its made for the rear diff. but really helps the glazed clutch surface's on the trannys clutch plates

Make sure you change the oil first if it hasnt been done in the last 20,000 miles ,an if you can afford it its best to have the system flushed, That way it gets all of the old oil outta the system. By just changing, draining the oil in the pan you are only getting like 1/3 of the oil outta the system

If that dont help the ole girl , you may be looking at a tranny repair, An if you use it for towing or hauling heavy loads I would suggest you try using an aftermarket oil. I my self prefer using G&C tranny oil, thats Georiga Carolina Oil, its a tad thicker then reg. tranny oil thats like close to 10w , the G&C is closer to a 20W. We have used it in many fleet vechiles an have cut our tranny repairs almost 60%, an its only pennys more then reg. tranny oil per quart, plus we have increased the drain mileage.
