Default F350 Rear Tires Wearing Out to Fast

I have a 04 F350 Diesel 4 x 4. I have about half the tread left on 70,000 mile tires after about 10K. The shocks are fairly new. The rear end seems to bounce a lot, especially over concrete highways, there seems to be a lot of axle hop. What would cause the tires to wear out prematurely? It has the single rear axle, not a dually

Welcome to the site..

OEM sized tires? Does it wear all 4 out premature, or just front/backs? Whats the wear pattern like,, even across the tread, cupped, inside/outside ect..

Just the rear tires, I replaced them once, haven't had to on the front yet. The tires are a bit over sized at 285 75R16. The wear pattern seems worst in the middle I try to watch the air pressure, I keep the rear at 80 psi, that's what the manual says.

Each tire has a different P.S.I. rating on the side wall depending on load range, ply rating, etc. Also (if diesel) it is a low end tourque motor ! your tire wear is going to happen during acceleration especially. Be easy on the throttle when u take off. Also you can get "ladder bars" through L&L they do wonders ! They also help prevent axle wrap !! good luck

If your running just an empty box with no load, then I would drop the pressure down to 60 PSI. This will allow the tire to run evenly across the tread area. Centrifical force will cause the tire to ballon and wear in the center as it is. The higher pressure just makes it more prominate, plus cause you to bounce even more. You should have LT series tires. What load range are your tires? MAX PSI for load range C is 50 PSI, D is 65 PSI and E is 80 PSI. However, those pressures are for when carring their MAX load capacity. Since the majority of your weight is on the front, thenI would run MAX PSI on the front as a radial tire will squat anyways. You may want to drop your rear pressure about 10PSI from MAX if running empty.
