How Many Miles is 460 Good For?
If you've run a 460 engine for a lot more than 100K miles without having to do any major overhaul work, I'd love to hear about it. I'm trying to figure out from actual owners how many miles they've gotten without having to rebuild heads, piston rings, etc, etc.
My 460 is in a 1978 Lincoln Mark V, but I assume it is basically the same engine as what is in the Ford trucks that had the 460.
If you've gotten more than 100K miles off your 460, please let me know. If you had to make any major overhauls to get it though (rebuilding heads, new cam or lifters, piston rings, etc) please let me know.
Mine has about 105K on it. It runs fine and doesn't burn any oil. I think rebuilding it would be a waste of money and that engine rebuilders just try to scare people into doing a lot of expensive machine work that isn't needed, do you agree?
What is likely to go bad on my engine as I pile up more miles? Do you think it will just probably start burning oil at some point? Any idea at about how many miles I should really worry about some sort of catastrophic failure like a bearing seizing up or rupturing or do you think I should just keep running it without doing any purely preventative work on it until it starts to burn oil?
I don't care if over time I lose, say 10 or 15 per cent of my power and/or gas mileage. I don't care if I have a few small oil leaks. None of that is worth spending thousands to fix.
Thanks very much for any real life info you can provide.
