Inserting the Pinion
1999 F 350, 2WD, 6 speed, 7.3 engine
I removed the pinion from the differential due to a leaking pinion seal.
Had to make up a puller tool to remove the shaft and I was a bit surprised as to how difficult it was. It was a fight all the way off.
Installed a new seal and noticed how much effort that was needed to push (press) the pinion back into place.
Is this normal?

I believe you are talking about the pinion flange.
Yes , they can be a little stubborn coming off and going on, as long as you don't/didn't hammer it off or on. There was a crush sleeve behind that flange and it is important to make sure you tighten the nut to the exact place you marked before removing.
