Sounds like a little bit of gear whine; however, since the 4R was never one of Ford's more durable trannys, it could signal something bit comming your way. If it has any driveability problems, it could be a signal for a overhaul. If not, it's probably just a worn (a little) planetary.

Yes, the 4R70W or 4R75E would bolt right up, but require a longer driveshaft and mounting, depending on drivetrain (4x4, 4 door, etc).
Of course, that would require cooler line changes, processor changes, and wiring changes. Today's cars and trucks are built around drivetrains, and bolting on another carb just isn't an option.

I just wish that they tried a K.I.S.S. when it comes to these things. They got way too complicated over the years. now if you ain't got a degree of some sort then your so screwed on these things. Just about the simplest thing I own (I mean autos only) is the old 63 impala that I can't bring myself to part with for any reason.
