Default Need help! Rear Differntial Question.

We have a 2006 Ford Five Hundred AWD. The rear start making a hauling noise . First we thought it mught be a bearing going basd and took it to our local dealer. They took a look and they think that is is the rear diferencial that needs to be replaced. They said that it is enclosed and they would have to order a new one from Ford. The estamted the cost at around $5000. Can the differential be opened and fixed by some else?
Thanks for any suggestions.

If it was put together, it can be taken apart. That much I know. If the person taking it apart can obtain the replacement parts for the guts, that's good. If not, you might as well look for a good used one.
