Flex overheated

Flex overheated
On her way back from work, my wife's Flex overheated and could not longer be driven. The temperature gauge went all the way to the red marker. Obviously, the engine light came on. There was enough coolant and oil. A tow truck drooped the Flex at a Ford dealership. Today they called me and said it needs a new engine ($7000 plus). Reason is that they found coolant in the oil and there has to be a crack in the engine block.
If that's the case, why there was coolant (the service rep originally said there was no coolant. I told him that was not the case and he quickly changed conversation). When I asked what caused the over heating, he said he does not know.
The whole thing smells funny. What else can I do to verify what's really going on?
2010 Flex.

There more than likely is coolant in the oil, now. Was there coolant in the oil before it overheated is the question?
I would be on the horn with Ford district headquarters and melting their phones till I got action on Ford's part. How old/milage of this vehicle? Warrenty?

I was very excited when we first bought this vehicle but if I knew then what I know now. NO WAY! 4 wheel bearings went bad before 80K, Fan controller bad at 95k radio bad at 80k. This is by far the WORST vehicle I have ever purchased! The dealer in my area, same thing. I had factory warranty to 100k but had to pay $100 every visit. took three visits to fix radio!! Shame on the engineer who put mounting screw for controller below plug where you cannot see it. This car, a top of the line 2009 Ford Flex is horrible. Did I mention that the Sun roof leaks? and NO there is no debris blocking the drain ports. Stay away! I have never written before on a forum but now I am an enthusiastic Ford Flex basher. JUNK ,JUNK, JUNK, Had a 2002 Honda minivan 289000 when tranny went. Back to Honda! I wanted to buy an American product! Shame on Ford. You knew these wheel bearings were not up to the task and you specked them anyway. Maybe you Should have taken the bailout money and spent it in engineering. NEVER AGAIN!

Most likely your water pump failed. Do a search for 3.5 liter Ford engine water pump failures. I just purchased a 2010 Flex with identical condition. I'm putting a 24,000 mile Flex engine (from a 2011) in for under $2500. Sometimes the engine can be saved if the failure is detected immediately (I don't know how to do that myself - maybe temperature gauge).
